Updating The Sat Nav in a SSangyong Korando

Last year we bought a brand spanking new car a SSangyong Korando.
It comes equipped with a built in TomTom navigation system. The important files are stored on an 8Gb SD card. Updating the Map and operating system for the unit is as simple as downloading 2 files copying them to an SD card and inserting into the unit.

Just one issue. The unit will only read an 8Gb SD card! I have loads of SD cards but most are 64Gb so the unit would not read them. I didn’t want to loose the original info on the supplied card so I bought another.

Now I just today decided that I should update the map etc before we go away in a fortnight.
I downloaded the updated files and backed up my old SD card to the laptop. formatted the card and copied the downloaded files over. PING!!!!! “The destination does not have enough free space. 340Mb more is required.” Oh Bum!
The SD Card is 7.39Gb the Map files are 7.83Gb. Now yes it is an 8Gb card but they are never exactly 8Gb. 2 identical cards will be different sizes. SO now what? Do I start buying new cards until I find one that will fit? That could cost a fortune and take ages and of course you can’t return a card just because it’s not quite 8Gb.

So how do you solve this issue? Well simple really you cheat! I told a 16Gb SD card that it was an 8Gb SD card.

I’ll tell you how but first I must make a disclaimer!

****If you make a mistake doing this and click on the wrong drive it is VERY EASY to render your computer USELESS!!!!****

The photos above show the Files to Download and the Disk size of the 8Gb SD Card.

So to cheat this insert a 16Gb or any larger card.
In the search box type “Administrative Tools” and select it.

Then in the window that opens select Computer Management

Then Select “Disk Management”

Now this is where you can screw up!

In this pic you can now see the new window that will open after you click Disk Management. Make sure you know which drive you are changing the properties of. Disk 0 is the disk that contains all of your computer operating system and files. If you select that one by mistake and do the next step you will instantly wipe your whole computer and there is no going back! SO DON’T GET IT WRONG!!

Right click on Disk 1 (in this case, it could be different if you have more discs) and select Delete Volume

Right click again and select New Simple Volume

Click Next

In the highlighted box type 8150 and click next.

Click Next

Click Next, to Format The disk

Click Finish. Your disk will now format and be 8Gb almost exactly.

When the formatting is finished your new 8Gb disk can now be used. The rest of the disk is still physically there but it’s not visible to the computer except in the Disk Management Tool.

You can now go back to explorer and format your new disk if you wish and rename it etc…. just as any normal SD card.

Copy your new files to the disk and try it in the Navigation Unit.
This worked great for me and I have the up to date maps.

Please DO NOT BLAME ME IF YOU SCREW UP! You clicked it not me.
